Preston entered the Broome ERA as a permanent participant on 11/11/13 as building contracts in Looma had finished and his employer, Brolga Developments, transferred his apprenticeship to Broome. He had previously stayed as a short stay participant when undertaking TAFE in the first year of his apprenticeship, so he had some connections with staff and participants. He had not lived outside of the family home before, therefore moving to Broome brought with it new challenges in regards to confidence, developing independent living skills and learning his role as an apprentice.
Within the ERA we were able to support Preston with his TAFE studies by providing assistance with homework and thru liaising with his lecturer. Some theoretical studies were difficult for Preston and some units were attempted two or three times before completion. MADALAH CFSW assisted to put in place appropriate supports with tutors at TAFE. MADALAH residential support staff helped him learn budgeting skills and he was able to save money to purchase musical instruments and a family visit to QLD.
His lecturer referred him to Kullari Building, Looma for a six months contract which would see Preston to the end of his apprenticeship. CFSW assisted at meetings with the Manager and he was successful in obtaining the position. Arrangements were made for him to return home. Preston returned to Broome ERA as a short stay participant and successfully completed his apprenticeship in July this year.
Well respected within his community as a role model to their youth he has great pride building homes for community members and is close to realising his dream to build a house on his Grandmothers land.
MADALAH has enabled him to obtain his apprenticeship, develop independent living skills and maintain connections with siblings residing at boarding school. He has grown into an honest and respectful man and an expert dough maker- his Pizza’s are greatly missed, and gained lifelong friendships and skills whilst residing at the MADALAH Limited Employment Related Accommodation.See more success stories
