Be Social

Elissa Hughes

I reside in Sutherland – Sydney, Australia My family is from the Gumbaynggirr community, Urunga/Coffs Harbour area, NSW. How scholarship activities have helped me:

  • Networking
  • Understanding leadership
  • Provide a face to the organisation that is helping me
  • Has alleviated financial pressures during my course of study, allowing greater commitment to my education. The scholarship has provided an invaluable resource which was pivotal to helping me succeed both academically, and with necessary educational resources

How mentoring activities have helped me:

  • Learning to think/argument/rationalise clearly
  • Understand effective leadership & learning techniques
  • Increase communication & professional understanding
  • Increase my ability to learn & grow in the academic, professional & personal environment

Leadership experiences/opportunities I have had:

  • Macquarie University – Critical Thinking unit
  • Abseiling course – participation, group, rescue & communication opportunity
  • Surf Life Saving Australia trainer / Vice Captain position
  • University of Western Sydney (UWS) teaching/tutoring
  • University of Western Sydney College (UWSCollege) teaching
  • UWS / NRL (National Rugby League) Graduates of League Mentor
  • Australian Army Cadets, Officer Of Cadets position – Facilitate national youth development in army-like environment

I am currently studying my Master of Criminology at the University of Sydney, situated within the Sydney Law School. Whilst I am studying, I provide academic support at the University of Western Sydney in multiple roles:

  • Academic notetaker & in-class practical assistant for UWS Disability Services
  • Casual Tutor – Policing Practices, School of Social Sciences and Psychology, UWS.
  • Mentor – UWS and NRL Graduates of League program
