Student Leadership Gathering 2017

April 28, 2017

The photos tell the story of our 2017 scholarship students’ leadership gathering. Sunday 26th March was a perfect day to be outdoors enjoying the sunshine and laughter of over 100 students, staff and parents, as they participated in a range of fun activities.

We started the gathering with an Acknowledgement of Country by Andrew Beck, the Indigenous Liaison Officer from Guildford Grammar School. This was followed by an inspiring account by Kimberley Benjamin about her experiences working for Reconciliation Australia and the Wirrapunda foundation, and training for and running the New York Marathon. Kimberley is a former MADALAH scholarship recipient and an outstanding member of the alumni.

With some encouragement from an otherwise shy group of students, the morning’s physical activities were in the form of a mini Olympics. The company Teamworks Development Australia, a company who manages and conducts training and development programs to help people reach their potential, engaged and challenged the students with team building, lateral thinking and leadership activities. This allowed students from our various partner schools and from different parts of WA to get to know each other, and take on leadership challenges. How does a group balance a small ball on a circular web of string?

Thirsty and hungry, the group ended the afternoon with a BBQ lunch and lots of chatter. Chantal Marsters our MADALAH staff member who organised the gathering commented, ‘it was amazing to see the involvement of the students in the various activities and the amount of fun they had getting to know each other’. It was a successful leadership gathering to inspire and motivate our scholarship recipients through the 2017 academic year, knowing that the MADALAH and the various school staff will be around to support and mentor them.

The success of the day is partly due to the generosity of our sponsors, Teamworks Development Australia, Curtin University and Woolworths. We would like to thank our sponsors, and everyone involved in organising and assisting on the day.
